Cathay Cargo, the freight operation of the Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific, has used CHAMP Cargosystems technology to go live with ONE Record in its first use.

Cathay Cargo is utilising CHAMP’s 1Neo-Connect for ONE Record, which is the International Air Transport Association’s standard for data sharing across the airfreight industry.

CHAMP provides a comprehensive range of integrated IT solutions and distribution services for the air cargo transport chain. The portfolio spans core management systems, messaging services and eCargo solutions.

Cathay Cargo can now offer a service that incorporates real-time booking updates with some of CHAMP Cargosystems’ major ground handlers around the world.

This is a significant step forward, the carrier said, as “the increased visibility allows Cathay Cargo’s ground handlers to better understand and prepare for the cargo being shipped to particular stations”.

According to a joint statement, “The successful launch of the new service demonstrates the commitment of Cathay Cargo and CHAMP Cargosystems to innovate and drive the adoption of the ONE Record standard and is the result of the significant collaboration and close working relationship between the two companies.”

Tom Owen, Cathay’s director cargo, said that the cargo carrier’s first ONE Record use case will be the start of a better experience for customers, while “ultimately enabling all of us to further streamline the air cargo supply chain”.

He continued: “This would not have been possible without our partnership with CHAMP. The adoption of ONE Record marks a turning point for the air cargo industry as a whole, and we look forward to exploring the possibilities it holds for digitalisation.”

Chris McDermott, CHAMP’s chief executive, added: “CHAMP sees ONE Record as the standard that will drive the full digitalisation of air cargo and enable new services, so it’s very exciting to see this implementation come to fruition.”

WCS
Cathay Cargo is the host freight carrier of the IATA World Cargo Symposium (WCS) taking place this week in Hong Kong.

Keynote speakers or participants in panel events at the event from Cathay Cargo will include chief executive Ronald Lam as well as Tom Owen, as well as Cathay Cargo Terminal chief operations officer Mark Watts.

Head of Cargo digital Ingrid Lee, Cathay’s general manager sustainability Grace Cheung and Simon Ng, chief executive of GLS (Global Logistics System), which designs many of Cathay Cargo’s digital projects, will also be involved.

CHAMP, too, is having a busy week. From Hong Kong, it has announced a new collaboration with professional services provider Deloitte and that globally active handler Swissport is to be a launch customer for its Cargospot-neo next-generation cargo management system.
