Maersk has launched a new 90,000 sq ft airfreight gateway in Miami to serve the US, Asia and Latin America markets.

The full-service, in-transit gateway will focus on transhipping European and Asian cargo via Miami to Latin America with connectivity on freighter and passenger capacity.

It will support the North American export market to Latin America and the Asian market that serves the Latin American supply chain via US routes, said Maersk.

The facility is expected to have “significant southward flows” and includes a US Customs bonded Container Freight Station (CFS) and Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF).

Brent Mayhew, regional head of airfreight for North America, said: “Adding to our global gateway network, this addition in Miami provides our customers with substantial added value, leveraging structured routing within a gateway environment. This includes seamless truck connectivity through our North American station network, ensuring efficient and reliable integrated logistics solutions.”

Fabio Acerbi, regional head of airfreight for Latin America, added: “Our Miami Gateway offers an alternative routing option that can provide predictable transit times from our global network, improving connectivity, flexibility, and reliability. It supports the North American and Asian export market, opening new possibilities for our customers in Latin America.”

Maersk grew its US airfreight business last year with the launch of two new airfreight gateways.

In July 2023, Maersk opened a 123,000 sq ft airfreight gateway near Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport (ATL). The site is used as a forward staging facility for Maersk Air Cargo’s Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport own controlled flight operations.

In October 2023, the company inaugurated a 130,000 sq ft airfreight import/export gateway near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Back in October 2022, it also inaugurated a Chicago airfreight gateway near Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD).

Maersk launched Maersk Air Cargo as a business in April 2022 and Maersk Air Cargo launched operations at the end of October 2022.

Maersk’s airfreight cargo coverage extends to 70,000 airport pairings across more than 90 countries around the world.
