Turkish Cargo is to offer capacity on flights between Liège in Belgium and Miami, Florida from November, in partnership with Avianca Cargo.
The move follows the signing in April 2023 of a memorandum of understanding with the Bogotá, Colombia-headquartered carrier. Under the agreement, the two airlines said they would explore potential cooperation opportunities and strengthen air cargo connections, combining their resources and expertise.
They also said they would consider potential collaboration initiatives such as freighter capacity agreements to provide air cargo customers access to greater capacity in a wider global network.
Turkish Cargo would be able to offer enhanced access to South American destinations by leveraging Avianca Cargo’s routes in the region, while Avianca Cargo will increase access to worldwide destinations through Turkish Cargo’s network.
Avianca Cargo currently has five Airbus A330-200 freighters in its fleet and Turkish Cargo 12 similar aircraft, the latter as part of a total all-cargo fleet that was reported in July to number 24 aircraft, including leased aircraft. Turkish is now the fourth largest global cargo carrier.
Both carriers also offer bellyhold capacity on their passenger fleets. Turkish Airlines was also reported to have ordered four Boeing 777Fs in June this year.
Avianca said last month it would increase its cargo capacity to Miami by 20%, much of it for the US fresh flower market. Its route network connects more than 68 destinations with 220 weekly cargo flights and also utilises bellyhold capacity on over 1,800 passenger flights.
