Lufthansa strike strife hits cargo

Lufthansa’s industrial relations problems hit services for a tenth time in 2014 with pilots again taking action over early retirement plans.
German pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) called for strike action yesterday (Thursday) beginning at 3 am local time and lasting until midnight on the same day.
The strike affected long-haul and cargo flights from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich and comes in the wake of walkouts on Monday and Tuesday as Lufthansa seeks to raise the standard retirement age of pilots, who can now leave the job at 55 on 60 per cent of their full pay before retiring at 65.
Vereinigung Cockpit is asking for fairer contract conditions for young pilots whilst Lufthansa has offered mediation with the pilots to try to resolve the dispute ahead of the busy holiday season.
