Brussels Airport reports increased cargo volumes in May

Brussels Airport has noted an increase in airfreight demand in May, as it continues the rollout of its Digital Green Lane for cargo processes.

The hub recorded a 35.8% year-on-year increase in cargo volumes in May, up to 71,851 tonnes.

The airport said cargo volumes carried in the bellyhold of passenger aircraft increased by 633% year on year, while truck volumes increased by 47%

Volumes on full-freighter flights increased by 22% year on year and the number of full-freighter flights operated increased by 10.6%.

Brussels Airport said in a statement: “In the full-freighter segment, there is an overall growth for all existing partners.

“The new Asia routes, started by our new clients in recent months, contribute to the additional growth. The activity in the integrator segment structurally remains at a higher level than in previous years thanks to the strong increase in online purchases.”

It added: “Import and export volumes have increased, especially inbound volumes coming from Asia and North America.”

The hub added that to date, it has handled more than 105m doses of coronavirus vaccines.

Additionally, at the end of last month, a number of air cargo companies at Brussels Airport signed up to the facility’s digital slot booking initiative which offers completely paperless processes for cargo pick up and drop off.

In total, 12 companies are now signed up to the Digital Green Lane initiative, including eight freight forwarders and four ground handling agents representing 75% of freight volumes at the airport.
