DHL facility at O’Hare opens its doors

DHL has opened a $10m global gateway facility at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
The integrator selected Chicago’s new northeast cargo campus at O’Hare because the site is “on track to be the largest cargo development built at a US airport in more than a decade when completed in the next few years”.
The new DHL 54,000 sq ft gateway can process more than 4,500 pieces per hour, ranging from small parcels to palletised freight. It includes an on-site US Customs operation that allows for faster processing capabilities for both inbound and outbound international shipments.
DHL Express’ latest investment has been driven, a statement said, by its “current and forecast shipment growth from US businesses trading internationally, as well as the continuing growth in e-commerce shipping”.
The new DHL gateway facility at O’Hare joins the integrator’s operations south of the airport, in Franklin Park, and another north of Midway International Airport, in McCook.
O’Hare is connected by air to DHL hubs in London, UK; Leipzig, Germany; Shanghai, China; Incheon, South Korea; and Hong Kong.
As well as DHL Express’s new facility there, O’Hare is also home to a DHL Global Forwarding operation, a 491,000 square foot office and warehouse building that houses 500 employees.
