John Holland-Kaye has informed the Heathrow Airport board of his intention to stand down as the gateway operator’s chief executive this year.

He has been at the helm for nine years.

In a statement, the board said that it would like to thank Holland-Kaye for his “exceptional leadership since 2014”.

It said that he has, over those nine years and counting, built a strong management team, developed a consumer-focused culture, improved cost efficiency and put Heathrow “at the forefront of global aviation’s decarbonisation”.

It attributed three successes in particular to his leadership: the creation of the plan for Heathrow expansion; successful navigation of the business through the Covid-19 crisis; and Holland-Kaye’s role in “putting aviation firmly on course for net zero by 2050”.

The chair of Heathrow Airport, Lord Deighton, commented: “John has been an extraordinary leader of Heathrow.

“During the past nine years, he has worked tirelessly and collaboratively with shareholders, ministers, airlines and other stakeholders to ensure the country can be proud of its ‘front door’.

The board would like to put on record our gratitude to John for his dedication and commitment to Heathrow throughout his tenure as CEO.”

The Heathrow has confirmed that it has begun a selection process to identify Holland-Kaye’s replacement.

It also confirmed that, in order to ensure a smooth handover, Holland-Kaye will remain as chief executive until his successor starts work in the position.
