Schiphol cargo up 7.3 per cent in Q1

CARGO volumes at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol rose by 7.3 per cent to 392,990 tonnes in the first quarter of 2014.
This year’s first quarter was also the second best in more than three years, beaten only by the final (peak) quarter of 2013, when a total of 410,698 tonnes passed through the facility, says a statement.
The airport’s Asian business retained top place, with a total of 142,256 tonnes (up seven per cent on the same period last year) but its share of cargo traffic fell slightly to 36.7 per cent (down from 39.3 for the whole of 2013).
North America was up 13.2 per cent, with a 17.8 per cent share, the Middle East was up 14 per cent, Africa grew by 1.6 and Europe rose by 10.9. Latin America dropped by 6.1, it adds.
Meanwhile, freighter movements increased by 6.6 per cent in the first quarter, totalling 4,029.
Enno Osinga, senior vice-president of cargo at Schiphol, comments: “We are greatly encouraged by the traffic figures for 2014 so far, which are maintaining the positive trends of the past 15 months. We are currently outperforming the global market, and our European neighbours.
“The campaign to streamline all our ground processes continues, thereby strengthening our position against other gateways and also helping to protect the role of airfreight in the global transport mix,” he adds.
