UK customs says 3,500 firms face losing ability to import

UK customs (HMRC) has warned that 3,500 companies have yet to register for its new import system and could lose the ability to import goods.
HMRC said that on October 1 import declarations will change from being processed through the current CHIEF system to the new Customs Declaration Service (CDS).
Many businesses are already using the CDS, however around 3,500 businesses are yet to move.
“It can take several weeks to be fully set-up on the CDS so those waiting to register risk being unable to import goods to the UK from October 1,” HMRC said.
Julie Etheridge, director of programme and operational delivery for borders and trade at HMRC, said: “There are now only two months left until businesses must use CDS for imports. Businesses need to move now or risk being unable to bring their goods into the UK.
“Registering takes time so businesses should start moving to the Customs Declaration Service to ensure a smooth transition and avoid disruption to their business.”
Traders can register or check they have access to CDS on GOV.UK and access live customer support services for additional help.
UK forwarder association BIFA has also recently urged traders to make sure they are ready for the switchover.
