Malpensa: Back in fashion for freighters

Malpensa (MXP) is now Italy’s fashionable airfreight hub, with integrators, ground handlers and freighter operators sashaying along the cargo catwalk, writes Roger Hailey.
The Milanese airport serves not only the northern Italian industrial cluster but also the vibrant fashion industry to the south, resulting in an 8.8% market-beating rise in volumes to just over 500,000 tonnes in 2015 – 30% of which is bellyhold volumes – and so maintaining the upward trajectory of 9.1% in 2014.
Cargolux, Qatar Airways, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Silk Way Italia and Emirates are among the many resident freighter operators while existing integrator customers FedEx and DHL are investing more than €100m in new sorting hubs at the under construction Cargo City South complex that will also house newcomer ground handler, WFS.
