Frankfurt high-flier wins IATA talent competition

Frankfurt Airport ‘s Erik Goldenstein won the IATA FACE-UP award for 2024, presented at the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) in Hong Kong on 14 March.

FACE-UP is a competition for recent university graduates who have developed innovative and transformational solutions in air transport logistics.

Goldenstein was voted the winner for his role in creating the NE:ONE Play app, built on IATA’s ONE Record data standard. It gives a very easy to understand overview of complex air cargo data, allowing users to browse through their shipment data as easily as browsing the web.

Goldenstein is a research assistant, data scientist and software engineer in the Aviation Logistics department of the Fraunhofer IML logistics institute and is currently working on a number of aviation digitalisation projects for Frankfurt Airport.

IATA global head of cargo, Brendan Sullivan, said: “I congratulate Erik for an outstanding achievement. The biggest opportunity in air cargo is digitalization and the key to this is the adoption of the ONE Record standard. It was great to see an innovation recognized that will help drive the implementation of this global standard for efficient data exchange throughout the supply chain.”

A panel of judges from across the industry selected three finalists who presented at the WCS closing plenary session for an audience vote. All three were shortlisted for demonstrating innovation and the potential to transform air cargo.

The other finalists were Arjan Bhogal with his scheme to reduce single-use plastics in the industry and Niclas Scheiber with his tool to manage complex ONE Record shipment data using advanced query technologies.

IATA’s FACE-UP competition takes place every two years and is part of its Future Air Cargo Executives (FACE) Program, launched in 2013 with the aim of attracting, retaining and developing bright and diverse young talent and preparing them to become the next generation of leaders in the cargo industry.
