Finnair’s cargo volume climbs 9.9 per cent in Q1

STRONG demand on Finnair Cargo’s Japanese and North Atlantic services boosted the amount of freight and mail it transported to 35,220 tonnes during the first quarter of 2014 – a 9.9 per cent improvement on the same period last year.
Revenue measured in freight-tonne-kilometres (FTKs) grew by 6.9 per cent against a 2.2 per cent capacity growth – resulting in a load factor of 64.7 per cent.
Juha Järvinen, managing director, comments: “Our new Brussels cargo hub, which opened last April, continues to deliver a positive contribution to our Asian network, with cargo tonnage growth in Germany and Belgium (accumulated over 12 months) up 20 and 252 per cent, respectively.”
However, Järvinen notes that although the Nordic carrier has witnessed “positive signals” in terms of recent volume development in many key markets, yields remain under pressure.
The airline added a third weekly MD-11 freighter service to Hanoi and Hong Kong this month, and re-opened its seasonal A330 service to Xi’an in central China at the end of March.
