Hong Kong cargo dips in March

Cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) decreased by 2.5% to 422,000 tonnes in March, said the airport authority.
The decline was mainly attributed to a 12% year-on-year drop in exports with South Korea and Europe registering the most significant drops during the month. However, imports were up 13%.
Passenger traffic meanwhile surged, rising 8.5% to 6.39 million year on year.
Over the first three months of the year, HKIA handled 1.15m tonnes of cargo, a year-on-year increase of 4.2% and, on a rolling 12-month basis, the 5m tonnes handled represented a year-on-year increase of 7.5%.
HKIA was ranked the world’s busiest cargo airport by Airports Council International for 2017, occupying the top spot for the eighth consecutive year. In 2017, it achieved record-breaking cargo throughput of 4.94m tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 9.2%.
Together with the 112,000 tonnes of airmail handled in 2017, HKIA’s total cargo and airmail throughput exceeded 5m tonnes for the first time.
