Typhoon Jebi brings Osaka to a standstill

Osaka Kansai International Airport remains closed as a result of Typhoon Jebi that made landfall in Japan on September 4, causing significant damage to the gateway’s Terminal 1 as well as other destruction and several deaths across the country.
The gateway, which was flooded on Tuesday, said all flights are currently cancelled, both runways are closed and access to the airport is restricted – largely to a tanker having collided with the main bridge between the airport and the mainland.
Thousands of passengers were stranded and there is an impact on freight flows too, with Air Canada Cargo, for instance, unable to accept shipments bound for or originating from Osaka Kansai “until further notice”.
The airport said it expects to reopen its runways on September 6 at the earliest.
Other gateways reported to be suffering from the effects of Typhoon Jebi include Osaka Itami and Chubu Centrair International.
Reuters said Typhoon Jebi was the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years.
