East-west airfreight prices hit low point in April

Drewry’s East-West airfreight price index declined by 0.7 points in April to a reading of 98.8, bringing the index down to its lowest level in over 12 months.
Compared to the same month last year average rates fell five points, "indicative of underlying market weakness rather than seasonal factors," said Drewry.
The London-based research house expects airfreight pricing to remain "stable" through May and June, but some "softening" is anticipated longer term as carriers release additional passenger capacity to cope with the Northern Hemisphere summer holiday season, which will add to the availability of bellyhold space.
