DHL’s green award for Lufthansa Cargo

German airline Lufthansa Cargo has been named a ‘preferred carrier’ by DHL Global Forwarding and presented with a GoGreen carrier certificate.
Rather like the Michelin Star system for restaurants, Lufthansa Cargo has been awarded with four “green aircraft” by the German-based logistics giant for its environmentally-friendly performance.
Lufthansa Cargo was the only airline to score full points in an environmental performance survey conducted DHL Global Forwarding, the carrier achieving top marks in all four of the GoGreen Carrier rating categories.
It was rated according to the following criteria: the specific CO2 emissions trend against an internal DHL benchmark (Carbon Efficiency); commitment to harmonising CO2 calculation and reporting standards and to other environmental projects (Engagement); the level of detail and quality of the CO2 efficiency data provided (Transparency); and also the degree of trust and cooperation (Cooperation).
Bettina Jansen, head of environmental management at Lufthansa Cargo, said: “With its GoGreen environmental programme, DHL is a sustainability pioneer in the logistics industry. We are extremely proud to have achieved these excellent ratings and taken top spot in the ranking.”
Lufthansa said that both companies have enjoyed “close cooperation and a trusting relationship” for some time, involving the regular exchange of information on fuel efficiency and emissions and joint activities aimed at harmonising CO2 calculation methods.
Ingo-Alexander Rahn, global head of airfreight at DHL Global Forwarding, said: “Sustainability and environmental management are key criteria for us in our cooperation with logistics partners. That is why DHL launched the GoGreen Carrier Rating programme.
“This is the first time that air cargo was included in the rating, with Lufthansa Cargo taking top spot straight off the bat, deservedly earning the right to join the ranks of our Preferred Carriers.”
Lufthansa Cargo aims to reduce its specific CO2 emissions by 25% by 2020 – taking 2005 as the baseline. The cargo airline’s environmental management system has been ISO 14001 certified worldwide since 2015.
In October 2016 Lufthansa Cargo and German logistics operator DB Schenker said that an environmental partnership had helped reduce their carbon dioxide output by around 10,000 tonnes over the first five years of the tie up.
Following the success of the first five years, the two companies said they were hoping to reduce their carbon output by a further 10,000 tonnes by 2020.
