AF-KLM opts for DWC

AT THE request of customers, Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo is to start operating 14 weekly freighter flights to and from Dubai World Central Airport (DWC) – its new freighter hub in the region – from next month.
Once completed, the new UAE airport will have the capacity and state-of-the-art facilities to handle 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.
“With this development, we will be the first and biggest scheduled cargo carrier in DWC. We are already using DWC as a transfer station for some of our Far East freighter routes and it will now become our main hub in the Middle-East, connecting flights between Europe, Asia, Africa, India and our freighter stations at Muscat, Doha, Bahrain, Dammam and Kuwait in the Middle East,” explains Mattijs ten Brink, senior vice-president of sales and distribution.
“With this move we can offer our worldwide customers more main-deck frequencies and a wider coverage,” he adds.
The carrier wants to position its fleet closer to Abu Dhabi, the hub of Etihad, in order to develop co-operation by offering seamless connections in the Etihad network. DWC is the main future cargo airport of the United Arab Emirates and will become the base for all major forwarding agents.
In order to organise smooth transfer links to Sharjah, where currently many forwarding agents are based, there will be seamless trucking solutions.
