Air NZ, JAL targeted for price-fixing

ALWAYS hungry for more, Australia has added two more airlines to its long list of carriers it is prosecuting for price-fixing airfreight.

Air New Zealand (Air NZ) and Japan Airlines (JAL) bring the total amount of airlines targeted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to 15.

The ACCC alleges that Air NZ and JAL had agreements to fix fuel surcharges on airfreight in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore between 2002 and 2006. These agreements “had the purpose or effect of fixing the price of a fuel surcharge and a security surcharge that were applied to air cargo carried by them and other airlines,” the ACCC said.

Other airlines the ACCC is still pursuing include: Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air Lines, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo and Thai Airways.
