Air NZ to cut cargo jobs

FALLING profits at Air New Zealand means the carrier will axe 441 jobs, many of which include workers in the cargo division.

The Service and Food Workers’ Union says some of its members who work in the company’s cargo, clerical and call centre divisions may lose their job in June – the end of the financial year.

Air New Zealand says its net profit after tax in the final six months of 2011 was NZ$38 million (US$31.8 million), an NZ$60 million ($50.2 million) fall from the same period a year earlier.

The company says 266 jobs are being cut through staff not being replaced or contracts not renewed, and 193 of these positions have already gone. A further 175 people will be made redundant.

The Engineering, Print and Manufacturing Union says 30 of its members who work in managerial roles and in cargo and ground service equipment are set to lose their jobs.
