Airfreight rate boost in February

Airfreight rates increased in February compared with January for only the second time in the last six years.
The latest figures from analyst Drewry’s Sea and Air Shipper Insight report show that average rates on 28 major east-west routes increased to $2.84 per kg in February compared with $2.76 per kg in January.
Rates for February were also up on last year when they stood at $2.48 per kg – a 14.6% year on year increase.
“Drewry’s East-West Airfreight Price Index inched up by 3% in February to reach $2.84 per kg. This was only the second time in six years the index has increased month-on-month in February, indicative of the underlying strength of the market," the analyst said.
"Drewry expects the index to soften in March, although it should remain above the comparable 2017 level as a result of strong demand.”
