All change at the Toledo hub

DHL is capitalising on Bax Global’s recent decision to shut down its Toledo Express Airport (US) operation.

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority board has approved a lease with DHL Worldwide to occupy part of the air cargo building for truck-aircraft cargo storage and transfer.

On a three-year, month-to-month lease basis the freight player will transfer cargo with nine flights into Toledo, employing 25 workers to handle the duties.

In related news, the board has approved a US$8.7 million buyout of Bax’s lease at the airport, allowing the port authority to begin marketing the vacated cargo-hub facility immediately.

Bax will be allowed to use office space at the hub through to March 2012 at no additional charge. The airfreight company will also be paid back the $260,000 it had advanced to the port authority for negotiated hub facility improvements, which were not built before the company planned to depart, eliminating about 700 jobs.
