Anti-smuggling staff screening at Indian airports

GROUND handling staff at two of India’s major airports should undergo a tougher screening process to combat smuggling, according to custom officials.
Their calls for more vetting comes after Delhi International Airport workers and private employees at Indira Gandhi International Airport were recently arrested on suspicion of being involved in illegal activities.
The customs department has suggested that all employees – including those engaged by airlines and cargo carriers – be subjected to these new guidelines.
It also wants to see private firms ‘blacklisted’ if the people they engage to carry out cleaning and maintenance work get involved in illegal activities.
