Arrest for illegal cargo to Iran

A FORMER freight-forwarder manager has contravened a US embargo on shipping contraband, including chemicals, to Iran.

The 50-year-old, who managed a Dutch cargo company, appeared in a court in New Jersey (US) on 6 February. He was arrested at Newark Airport in August on suspicion of illegally exporting aircraft parts, peroxide and other goods to Iran in 2007 and 2008.

The businessman could see the maximum penalty of 20 years incarceration cut to five years and a US$250,000 fine because he confessed. The verdict is due on 15 May.
