Asia Cargo Monthly: February figures confirm good start to the year

Asian carrier’s cargo performance in February has confirmed a strong start to the year for the region.
January’s figures suggested that airlines in the region had got off to a good start. However, question marks remained as performance in the first two months can be affected by the timing of the Chinese New Year. It is not until February’s figures are reported that a fuller picture is available.
As expected, traffic growth did softened in February, but when looking at the two months together it seems that carriers from the region have enjoyed a busy start to the year.
The region’s largest cargo carrier, Cathay Pacific, saw February freight traffic increase by 8.3% on last year to 827m cargo and mail revenue tonne kms. Over the first two months, demand is up 9.5% year on year.
Cathay Pacific director commercial and cargo Ronald Lam said: “Our cargo performance continued to be strong with both tonnage and yield achieving positive growth over last year.
“The positive growth in gross cargo yield was also partly contributed by favourable exchange rates.”

At Singapore Airlines Cargo demand was up 11.8% in February to 520m freight tonne kms on the back of capacity additions of more than 10%.
Over the first two months of the year the airline saw cargo demand improve 7.8% compared with last year.
Air China saw cargo demand increase by 5.2% in February to 487m revenue freight tonne kms (RFTK) on the back of expansion in its international routes. Over the first two months of the year, demand at the airline is 12.7% ahead of 2017 levels.
China Southern, meanwhile, saw cargo traffic increase by 10% year on year in February to 441m RFTK on the back of international expansion, while over the first two months of the year demand was up by 11.6%.
At Eva Air and China Airlines, demand improvements did not reach the levels of their larger rivals.
Eva Air registered a 2% year-on-year improvement in February and 1.9% for the first two months and China Airlines recorded a 4.4% increase in February and 3.3% during January and February combined.
