Brawl in Calcutta cargo offices

CARGO operations at Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata (Calcutta) were halted last week as employees took part in a mass brawl.

Over 100 Airports Authority of India (AAI) employees stormed the customs offices in the middle of a meeting last Wednesday. The two groups clashed over new regulations demanding employees to hold valid identification cards to enter the new high-security cargo terminal.

Two sepoys (security guards) had been refused entry when they cards were revealed to have expired and they and their colleagues to their protest to the customs offices.

“Carrying entry passes are a must as security has been stepped up after the Mumbai siege,” said an official.

The fight took place outside of normal cargo-handling hours so there was no disruption to usual business.
