Chennai sees cargo boost

CHENNAI airport handled 24 per cent more cargo in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year. 
In total, 1,13,515 metric tonnes of cargo were handled between 1 January and 31 May compared with 91,251 tonnes in January to May 2009.
Export rose 29 per cent to 61,282 tonnes from 47,334 tonnes in 2009, while import grew 19 per cent to 52,233 tonnes from 43,917 tonnes.
A new cargo centre is currently being constructed in the area and this is expected to increase to cargo handling to 600,000 tonnes from the present 250,000 tonnes.
