China and Taiwan thaw shipping links

CHINA and Taiwan have resumed shipping links after nearly 60 years. China has threatened military action to seize the island state ever since it claimed sovereignty over Taiwan in 1949.

Flights and cargo shipments used to have to be rerouted through a third region, often Hong Kong or Macau, due to a ban on direct links between the two.  Now there are to be 108 direct daily flights a week and 60 new cargo flights a month.

“We’ve got so many participating airports that it’s hard to allocate all the flights,” said Lee Lung-wen, director-general of Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration.
