Dublin to Dubai fills Emirates’ belly

STARTING next year Emirates will launch a daily Dublin (Ireland) to Dubai (UAE) service carrying 15 tonnes of belly-hold cargo.

Emirates SkyCargo is already active in Ireland, primarily transporting goods through Manchester and London (both UK).

Pharmaceuticals, which make up nearly a quarter of Ireland’s exports, are expected to be amongst the commodities carried. Ireland already manufactures and exports Botox to South Africa, the Far East and Australia. Electronic components, computer parts and software contribute significantly to Ireland’s export market and are expected to be among the tonnage when flights begin on 9 January.

“There has already been huge interest from the Irish export market in our new direct service and cargo space and capacity are being filled quickly, due to our network of 118 destinations that will be selling in and out of Ireland,” Robert Siegel, Emirates’ regional manager cargo commercial, said.

Emirates SkyCargo has appointed Michael Meagher, former executive vice-president at Saudi Airlines Cargo Company, as cargo manager.

The Middle Eastern carrier has created 25 new jobs in Ireland with the opening of its first office in Dublin. The new positions are in areas including sales, reservations, ticketing, finance, airport operations and cargo.
