DWC welcomes Cathay’s first freighter

CATHAY Pacific has begun operating freighter flights from Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC).
The Asian carrier’s inauguration flight with a B747-8F arrived at DWC from Hong Kong (China) on 1 February.
Cathay has moved its weekly freighter service from Dubai International (DXB) to DWC – its new freighter hub in the Middle East to connect Europe and Asia.
The airline’s 14 weekly passenger flights will continue to be run from DXB, a statement says.
Ali Angizeh, vice-president of cargo and logistics at Dubai Airports, states: “Cathay Pacific is a major freight carrier with a global network and its arrival at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central will boost the airport’s growing reputation as an up and coming global hub.
“Airlines at DWC enjoy unique advantages, including the bonded-road connection to Jebel Ali port and the free zone.”
Brian Yuen, Cathay Pacific country manager for the UAE and Qatar, adds: “Dubai is an important market for us. By moving our freighter operation to DWC and keeping our passenger flights at DXB, we can offer forwarders and shippers with even more choice and flexibility.”
Cathay currently flies to 44 freighter destinations with a fleet of 26 B747Fs, including 13 -8s (plus one more due to be delivered in 2016). The airline’s cargo unit transports more than 120,000 tonnes of cargo per month.
