EVA swings to gain in 2010

TAIWAN airline EVA Airways posted NT$5.2 billion (US$163 million) in net profit in the first half of the year, compared with a net loss of NT$1.6 billion ($50 million) for the first half of 2009.

EVA’s success is largely attributable to the opening of the first direct cargo flights between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland for 50 years.

China had resisted the move because agreeing to it would suggest cross-Strait routes were international and therefore that Taiwan was independent from the mainland; a sensitive issue with the Chinese government.
