Frankfurt 8.2 per cent down

THE Fraport Airports Group achieved revenues of US$2.369bn during the first three quarters of 2012 – despite cargo slipping 8.2 per cent at its flagship hub.
Frankfurt Airport, Fraport’s headquarters, handled 1.53m tonnes of airfreight this year, but that was 137,000 tonnes less than the same period in 2011, according to the Fraport Interim Report published today.
Bosses at the German airport blamed continued global economic weakness and a court ban on night flights for the volume slide, which impacted, in particular Fraport’s Ground Handling business segment.
European freight was down 20 per cent while intercontinental cargo fared better recording a seven per cent fall. Group freight traffic, which includes six other airports including Delhi, India and St Petersburg, Russia, fell 7.3 per cent.
Ground Handling, which employs 8,833 people, saw its revenues fall by 0.9 per cent.
Passenger traffic was up 3.3 per cent.
