Japanese cargo rising

JAPAN’S All Nippon Airways (ANA) reveals its year-on-year international cargo tonnage rose 24.5 per cent in February, to 42,470 metric tonnes.

The sharp rise followed a decline of 10.5 per cent in January.

The freight ANA carried on its international routes from 1 April 2011, totalled 464,603 tonnes, up 3.1 per cent from the same period of the previous financial year.

The carrier’s domestic cargo from April to February amounted to 438,323 tonnes, up 1.1 per cent from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Japan Airlines (JAL) reveals its international cargo volumes rose 14.1 per cent in February to 19,678 tonnes after a drop of 3.1 per cent in January.

The results mark an upturn for JAL, which underwent a major restructuring programme after filing for bankruptcy protection in 2010.

Its collapse was reportedly one of the country’s biggest corporate failures, with the firm’s shares plummeting to an all-time low.
