LH begins new freight centre

LUFTHANSA Cargo laid the foundation stone for a new freight center in CargoCity South at Frankfurt Airport. The new Lufthansa Cargo Service Center, with warehouse capacity of about 20,000 m2 and more than 8,000 m2 of office space, ideally augments the Lufthansa Cargo Center in CargoCity North.

The new handling facility will principally handle mail shipments from medium-sized forwarders and partner airlines. Simultaneously, the Service Center will accommodate the German and the European sales organisations of Lufthansa Cargo, which were previously housed in Kelsterbach. The new facility is scheduled to commence operations in Autumn 2009.

Lufthansa cargo chairman, Carsten Spohr, said: “With the new service center, we are now also present in the south of the airport, taking us even nearer to our local customers: forwarders operating around the globe. Operating with lean processes and cutting-edge logistics technology, the Lufthansa Cargo Service Center will enhance our position as the industry’s quality and innovation leader. Simultaneously, the new facility signally affirms Lufthansa Cargo’s commitment to its home base in Frankfurt/Main, Europe’s biggest cargo airport. Once the legal go-ahead for a final ruling on practicable night-flight arrangements is obtained, we will press ahead firmly with plans for building a new Lufthansa Cargo Center in the north of the airport.”

Dr Wilhelm Bender, chairman of the Fraport operating company, said: “With its new Service Center, Lufthansa Cargo is strengthening not only CargoCity South, but also Frankfurt Airport generally and the entire Rhine-Main logistics region. Frankfurt is and will remain, the strongest and most attractive airport on the European mainland.”

Project developer Ardi Goldman, architect of the commercial buildings, said: “We are building a striking logistics structure with clear, straight lines. It will harmoniously combine its logistics purpose with forward-looking architecture. That I am able to implement this project with a tenant so highly valued as Lufthansa Cargo gives me particular pleasure.”
