Logistics industry responds to Ecuador earthquake

The air transport and logistics industries have begun contributing towards relief efforts to help those in Ecuador affected by a huge earthquake at the weekend.
On Saturday evening, the country was struck by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake and 300 aftershocks leaving more than 450 people dead and 2,500 people injured.
Deutsche Post DHL is sending its Disaster Response Team (DRT) to Manta and its volunteers will provide pro-bono logistics support at Eloy Alfaro International Airport in the city.
They will coordinate incoming international aid, preparing it for onward transportation to areas affected by the quake.
DRT manager Gilberto Castro said: “When a natural disaster strikes, a rapid response is needed to get vital relief supplies to people in need. Efficient handling of incoming aid by professionals is key.”
Meanwhile, relief organisation Airlink, which consists of more than 35 commercial and charter airlines and which provides a link between aviation and humanitarian groups, has assisted in the transportation of personnel.
This includes a response team from All Hands Volunteers, and personnel from Waves for Water who will provide access to clean water for those in need.
“Thanks to United Airlines for its tremendous support via United Charity Miles,” the organisation said.
