Lufthansa board OKs US$779m cargo centre

LUFTHANSA’s supervisory board has given the go-ahead for a US$779m (€600m) state-of-the art cargo and logistics centre to be built at Frankfurt Airport (Germany).
The original proposal for the complex had to be “considerably adjusted” owing to the dire economic situation and the night flight ban imposed at the airport.
“The centre will have 20 per cent less capacity than originally planned,” a spokesperson reveals.
The 152,000 sq m facility, replacing the 30-year-old existing cargo centre, will handle 1.6 million tonnes of freight annually.
Work on the main building, which will get under way in 2014, is scheduled to be completed four years later. Operations will continue throughout the construction period but some processes will be relocated to other areas.
“Building a new logistics centre is a major component of our ‘Lufthansa Cargo 2020’ strategy,” explains chief executive officer and chairman Karl Ulrich Garnadt.
“The new facility will enable us to take a quantum leap in the logistics process and will make the company fit for the challenges of the future.”
