Police catch Mumbai gold cargo raiders

INDIAN police have arrested the perpetrators of last year’s gold heist at Air India’s cargo area at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai.

Four men stole over 60kg of gold and silver coins worth over US$100,000. In their escape they ran over and killed, with their getaway car, the chief security guard who had tried to stop them.

The police uncovered the men’s involvement when they investigated the murder of a slum scrap-metal dealer. At the scene of his murder they recovered some of the coins and their empty cases. His accomplices had killed him. One of them, Suresh Kamble, had worked for Ark Aviation and used his position to keep watch for cargo targets.

Police are continuing to search for further suspects.
