Qatar’s conversion conversations

DESPITE a recent spat over gaps in Airbus’ cargo strategy, Qatar Airway’s chief executive Akbar Al Baker is in talks with the manufacturer to convert up to 20 A330s into freighters.

AL Baker had previously threatened to buy rival Boeing aircraft for his freighter arm instead, but negotiations at the Singapore Air Show in February have changed his mind.

Qatar is also pressing Airbus to improve its plans for the all-new A350. Al Baker has expressed concerns with the performance, weight and capacity of the planned A350-1000 model. Qatar Airways is the largest customer of the A350.
