Security training underway at Africa’s airports

STAFF at African airports are rapidly undertaking security training programmes, the latest of which began in Dakar on 14 March.
An audit by the African Civil Aviation Organisation illustrated serious issues, and an injection of €1 million (US$1.4 million) from the French government has propelled airport authorities into action.
At Dakar staff from 20 African countries from police to cargo handlers participated in a course to bring safety standards up to international levels in the face of the threat from militants and hijackers.
A UTA civil airliner was blown up over Niger in 1989, and more recently security fears were raised when a Nigerian man attempted to blow up a US jet on 25 December 2010.
