Swift Freight changes hands

THREE years after it acquired transportation and logistics solutions provider Swift Freight, Barloworld Logistics Middle East & Asia has sold the company to its former chief executive officer.

On 1 March 2011 Warren Erfmann acquired 100 per cent of Swift’s global operations, except for the Dubai office where he has acquired approximately 70 per cent of the freight forwarding division, which deals with Africa.

“Barloworld Logistics wanted to retain the non-African portion of the freight forwarding business, as the customers are potential supply chain management customers and supply chain management is in line with their strategy,” Erfmann told Air Cargo News.

Erfmann’s focus meanwhile is on Africa. “Africa is why we get out of bed in the morning. Everyone is eyeing Africa as a future growth area now where previously many perceived this area to be too risky. We have been in this market for almost 22 years and our network of 22 offices offers solutions to anyone who wants to deal with the continent.”

Barloworld has renamed the non-African portion of the business that it has retained from Swift Freight International to Barloworld Logistics. The 70 per cent of the Dubai operations that Erfmann has acquired will now trade under the name Swift Freight.
