Swissport’s Tanzania monopoly ends

FOUR companies have been awarded licenses to operate at six airports in Tanzania, ending Swissport’s role as sole ground handler.
The move by The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) would boost competition, reducing charges and fares. The quartet of new companies is Aviation Handling Services, DTP Jet Concept, Mtwara Aviation Services and Taha Fresh Handling.
“Every ground-handling company will work to their best ability in order to meet the expectations of their customers,” TCCA assistant public information officer Anita Jonas said. “Customers will get value for their money, [as] the charges will not be as high and clearance of goods will be much faster due to the fact that more ground-handling companies will be offering the services.”
Swissport Tanzania met the requirements and was licensed to operate at Class I airports in Tanzania for a term of five years effective from 25 May 2008. The license allowed the company to operate at any airport in the country, subject to obtaining a concession from the respective airport operator.
