Thai to operate freighter fleet

THAI Airways’ managing director cargo, Pruet Boobphakam (right), has confirmed the carrier’s plans to operate its own freighters eventually.“That will be the future,” he said. “We need a full cargo business to be a complete airline.”He added that the cargo business would be separate from Thai, with its own profit and loss statement. He denied that the carrier’s older 747s and A300s would be converted into freighters to provide the fleet.“Our 747s are older than 18 years,” he said. “That’s not viable for conversion. It will cost up to US$20 million to convert one plane.” Instead, they will be sold.
