Turkish Airlines prepares for a step-up in capacity

TURKISH Cargo is gearing itself up for the introduction of major new freighter capacity much earlier than expected, when it receives its first Airbus A330 freighter later this year.

The airline has recently announced that the maiden aircraft received will be one of the test aircraft currently undergoing trials with the European manufacturer.

Originally THY had been expecting to receive both aircraft in late 2011, but when offered an earlier delivery time for the first aircraft jumped at the chance. The recent rapid improvement in worldwide air cargo volumes, combined with a discounted price for the test aircraft swayed the decision.

Turkish Airlines chief executive officer, Temel Kotil, was enthusiastic about the re-arran­­­ged delivery and had no hesitation in taking up Airbus’ offer, stating that: “It’s cheaper. It’s a good machine. The A330 is an established aircraft.”
