UPS leans on international trade

UNITED Parcel Service (UPS) has recorded higher second quarter profits from overseas business against a weak US background.

With the addition of new flights to and out of China, Atlanta-based UPS reported net earnings of US$1.063 billion, up from $845 million a year ago. Revenue rose to $13.2 billion from $12.2 billion a year ago.

Chief executive officer Scott Davis has his work cut out for him. Davis is on the US president’s Export Council, which aims to drive US business growth by doubling exports by 2015.

Outside of the US the integrator will begin operating new flights into Chengdu (China) further expanding the company’s connections between Asia, Europe and the US.

The daily MD-11F flight through Chengdu will originate in UPS’ European hub in Cologne (Germany) and make a stop in Warsaw (Poland) before visiting Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport. It then will operate to UPS’ Asia hub in Shanghai (China).
