Delta Cargo to extend Bluetooth tracking capability

Delta Cargo will expand its ULD Bluetooth tracking capability to businesses based off-airport from early next year.
The US freight carrier began offering real-time Bluetooth-based tracking of its ULDs from select on-airport warehouses earlier this year, but the expansion to cargo customers’ own facilities represents a significant extension to the service.
Customers will have the ability to track their shipment from their own warehouses to a consignment’s final destination.
They will be able to track their shipment on the deltacargo.com website, while they will also be able to receive customised ‘push’ notifications.
“The extension of the tracking technology directly to our customers’ facilities will ensure visibility for the whole freight journey, creating a best-in-class shipping experience,” said Shawn Cole, Delta’s vice president – cargo.
“This is a genuine innovation, and we are on track to launch in January 2019, with full visibility on deltacargo.com later that year, once the customer installations are complete.”
In a process begun in March, Delta has deployed readers at 80 of its own and partner airline warehouse locations across six continents, including all US hubs and major trucking stations.
Almost 40% of its large ULD fleet has been tagged with Bluetooth asset trackers.
By January next year, Bluetooth tracking will be available on nearly all of Delta’s ULDs, the carrier said, with relevant customer reader installations anticipated to be completed soon after that.
Of particular value to the carrier, real-time ULD tracking will allow Delta’s Cargo Control Center to more accurately monitor and reroute shipments that are delayed due to irregular operations, such as bad weather.
