AmSafe first to meet new freight fire standard

AmSafe Bridport says it is the first and so far only manufacturer to produce cargo fire containment covers to new US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) standards.
Following a number of fires in freight on board aircraft, in July last year the FAA issued TSO-C203, a minimum standard for fully certified fire containment covers (FCCs).
UK-based AmSafe’s system includes a fire cover, pallet net and patented deployment kit follows which, it says is a result of ten years of development, testing and trials of over 1,000 FCCs in operational use.
The product actually exceeds minimum requirements, it adds.
"It can mitigate the risk of fires in undeclared dangerous goods on pallets and is already being used by a number of airlines.
AmSafe Bridport’s Joe Ashton said: “With the continued increase of high tech electronic equipment containing lithium batteries being shipped by online traders unaware of the dangerous goods regulations, the risk of the next major cargo fire is high.
“On average, the pilot and crew have just 17 minutes from the initial notification of an ‘on board’ fire, to safely land the aircraft.
“With our FCC protecting your load we can now extend the protection time, up to six hours.”
