Lights out

A small gesture, perhaps, but Qatar Airways switched off the lights for an hour at its corporate HQ to mark Earth Hour on March 25. It’s all part of a global campaign to highlight the importance of combatting climate change.
Earth Hour, launched nine years ago, is the world’s largest movement aimed at bringing people together to protect the planet and highlight environmental issues.
Qatar Airways group chief executive Akbar Al Baker described it as “an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation.”
Qatar Airways has programmes to monitor and manage electricity consumption throughout its operations and is also seeking to reduce its environmental footprint by investing in new technologies, and raising awareness to change behaviour — including fitting automatic timers to exterior building lights to ensure they are not left on during daylight.
