Ex-Air Cargo News editor scoops Lifetime Achievement award

Roger Hailey and Emma Murray, Seahorse Chairman and CEO of Meantime Communications.

Former Air Cargo News editor Roger Hailey was this week awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by supply chain journalist organisation, the Seahorse Club.

The Seahorse Club holds an annual awards ceremony to recognise and celebrate the best journalism in supply chain, logistics, and transport, as well as celebrating individuals who have gone above and beyond to represent the industry.

This year, Hailey was recognised for his contribution to logistics journalism since he started writing on the topic in the mid-1980s.

He started his career in journalism at Heathrow Airport in 1977, working for the Brenard Press news agency, where he progressed from newsroom trainee to airside reporter, writing reports on celebrities as they arrived and departed the airport.

After stints at local papers and the Heathrow staff newspaper, he entered the logistics trade press in the mid-1980s, joining Air Cargo News for the first time.

This was followed by a decade at International Freighting Weekly, six years as editor, and then to shipping title Lloyd’s List with numerous senior roles over 17 years, including news editor, Brussels correspondent, logistics editor and then two years as editor of Containerisation International (CI).

From CI, Hailey returned to Air Cargo News after a gap of 27 years, becoming the editor for five years before deciding to turn freelance in May 2019, and still contributing regular write-ups to this publication until December of this year.

For Air Cargo News’ 40th anniversary edition, Hailey wrote an interesting article on how publishing had changed in his 45 years in the business.

Elsewhere at the awards, current Air Cargo News editor Damian Brett was runner-up in the Air Cargo Journalist of the Year Award, which was won by regular Air Cargo News contributor Megan Ramsay.

And Sophie Barnes of Air Cargo News’ sister title Heavylift and Project Forwarding International won the Multipurpose Cargo Logistics Journalist of the Year prize.
