Swissport is recovering from a cyber attack with affected IT infrastructure contained.

The Switzerland-based ground handler said in a Twitter post on February 4 that part of its IT infrastructure was “subject to a ransomware attack”.

Swissport said the “attack has been largely contained”. In a subsequent Twitter post on February 5, the company said: “Affected infrastructure swiftly taken offline. Manual workarounds or fallback systems secured operations at all times. Full system clean-up and restoration now under way.”

The company’s cargo segment handled a record 5.1m metric tons in 2021.

The 5.1m metric tons of throughout in 2021 is up from 4.6m in 2019, pre-pandemic. These goods passed through more than 100 air cargo centres.

This is an all-time high and represents an increase of some 10% over the 2019 pre-crisis levels, said Swissport.

The ground services division handled just over two million flights compared to 4.1m in 2019 and served some 97m passengers, compared to 265m in 2019. The number of flights handled is up 21% on 2020.

Swissport operates at 285 airports in 45 countries.
