LATAM Cargo opts for recycled pallets in Chile

LATAM Cargo is switching from traditional wood and conventional plastic pallets to recycled plastic pallets made from beverage boxes.

The cargo division said that the new pallets are more durable than existing designs – they can last up to 10 years – and will prevent the disposal of nearly 30 tons of wood annually.

The investment is also part of its commitment to achieving the group’s goal of zero waste to landfill by 2027.

Currently, plastic or wooden pallets are used to transport bulk cargo from the warehouse to the aircraft, but for domestic cargo operations in Chile, these were replaced with the high-density recycled plastic pallets.

The pallets are manufactured by Rehrig Pacific and are 50% made from recycled boxes and 50% from conventional plastic.

Compared to traditional pallets, they are lighter, do not require as much maintenance and are more hygienic, as they do not accumulate fungi or bacteria.

“Their non-slip structure also minimizes the risk of cargo displacement, even in extreme temperatures, withstanding from -20°C to 60°C without losing their properties,” LATAM Cargo said.

“Given their operational advantages and their contribution to the circular economy, the group plans to expand this initiative to cities where it currently has cargo operations nationwide.

“Additionally, it will evaluate the implementation of the use of these recycled plastic pallets in other cargo operations in South America (Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil).”

Cristina Oñate, vice president sustainability and product at LATAM Cargo Group, said: “Sustainability is a priority for LATAM Cargo Group and the transition to recycled materials, such as plastic pallets, reflects our commitment to the circular economy and the goal of being a zero waste to landfill group by 2027.

“In line with this, the use of recycled plastic pallets adds to initiatives already implemented in other operational processes, such as replacing plastic with reusable blankets or a stretchable tape.”
