Air Canada Cargo has improved its cold chain capabilities at Heathrow Airport in the UK with the opening of an upgraded facility.

The upgrades to the self-handled facility, Air Canada Cargo’s largest European hub, aim to expand and optimise the carrier’s cold chain handling capabilities for shipments such as pharmaceuticals, fresh food and other perishables.

The upgraded facility will feature nearly 900 sq ft of temperature-controlled areas to meet industry standards and global regulatory requirements to ensure products stay within the required temperature range.

“Air Canada Cargo continues to invest in key infrastructure across our global network. The upgraded cold chain handling facility in London Heathrow is another step in our customer offering and positions Air Canada Cargo to continue successfully growing its business,” said Jon Turner, vice president, cargo, at Air Canada.

Last year, Air Canada Cargo revamped a customer reception area at its Heathrow facility. This was the first part of a wider project to modernise many parts of the facility.

Figures made available at the UK’s recent Cold Chain Live event from the 2024 Cold Chain Report show air cargo facilitated the export of £5.6bn and the import of £7.5bn worth of chilled and pharmaceutical products last year.
